Movie Theme Night: Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Every Saturday we will be sharing with you our ideas for family movie nights. Movie reviews and fun theme night ideas.

Our Super-Cool-Fab Review Team...

Our crack team of expert Movie Reviewers are this week reviewing Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

This has to be one of the best adaptations of book-to-movie around. The casting is perfect and it's really like seeing the books come to life. Dash B. Cool is a major Wimpy Kid fan; Greg Heffley is his role model. When the books came to life on screen it took  Wimpy Kid Love to another level. The humour and wit is clever enough that adults will love it too, but silly enough that little brothers and sisters will happily sit through the movie. If you have a tween boy who doesn't like to read show them the Wimpy Kid movies... then hand them the books. They'll be hooked.

Movie Plot Summary: Greg Heffley is the middle child in a family of three boys who is about to enter Middle School. He has a wannabe rockstar teenage older brother (Roderick) while the youngest (Manny) gets away with murder. All the life comedy and angst of a pre-teen semi-nerd who just wants to fit in and get the pretty girl to like him. Really worthy of a movie night. Diary of a Wimpy Kid II is also out on DVD and is a great sequel, while the long-awaited third instalment is due to come out at the movies any day now.

Here's what our experts have to say about Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Dash. B. Cool: "I liked it; it was funny. To be honest with you Greg Heffley is a bit like me and so I really enjoy watching the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. I can't wait until Dog Days comes out."

Dash scores this movie's "coolness" as:

Foxy Fab: "I like Diary of a Wimpy Kid because it was funny I guess. My favourite character is Rowley because he is very funny but in a good way and he doesn't try to be funny. The movie is about being a true friend."

Foxy rates this movie's "fabness" as:

Super Scrag: "It was good. I watched it cos my brother chose it. I didn't like the part when Rowley wasn't Greg's friend, that made me feel sad. I liked the end and the part when they were friends again."

SuperScrag scores this movie's "super-ness" as:

..............

This movie is rated (PG), probably because it deals in part with the angst of growing up and also the Halloween "chase through the woods" scene might make little kids feel scared (we forwarded it for Scrag). It's not a serious movie although there are some lessons learned in a very lighthearted amusing comedic way. Tweens will especially enjoy this movie and the others which follow it. We all enjoyed watching this movie (some of us more than others).

Ideas to Make Your "Wimpy Kid" Movie Night even more Super-Cool-Fab...

This is one that would be great for a sleepover. Throw in some wrestling, maybe a game of "Cheese Touch", pop some popcorn, make some icecream sodas and then snuggle down for a good laugh at Greg and his hapless buddies.

Have a great Saturday!
