Family Movie Night: How to Train Your Dragon

Every Saturday we will be sharing with you our ideas for family movie nights. Movie reviews and fun theme night ideas.

Our Super-Cool-Fab Review Team...

Our crack team of expert Movie Reviewers are this week reviewing How to Train Your Dragon.

This is one of the coolest animated kids films I've seen in a while. When it first came out at the movies, we didn't go watch it because our kids were slightly younger and dragons sounded scary. So were a bit slow to get onto this one, finally getting to see it on DVD recently. It was a hit with the whole family. Action, a great story, humour, suspense, adventure. A cool cast. Great animation. What else do you need in a movie? This is one the grown ups don't mind watching (and re-watching) at all.

Movie Plot Summary: In a Viking village which is frequently raided by dragons, its tough being a nerd. Especially if you're the chief's son. So our hero is a boy who doesn't fit in. He's a disappointment... and then he surprises everyone. The story is about being brave, breaking the mold and being yourself, among other things. A bunch of lessons to store up for future deep-and-meaningfuls, as well as great laughs and entertainment in the here and now.

Here's what our experts have to say about How to Train Your Dragon...

Dash. B. Cool: "It was a good movie; it had Scottish accents in it. I think it will be a good movie for kids. I liked the fighting bits and the dragons were cool. It might be a little bit scary for little kids but for older kids, yeah, it's good."

Dash scores this movie's "coolness" as:

Foxy Fab: "I thought it was really good and funny. There were lots of funny bits. The dragons weren't scary and the black one was cute. The girl in the movie was pretty, the movie was cool and the action was great. The main guy in the movie was weak and he wasn't a real warrior and nobody trusted him cos he was very clumsy but all the dragons were nice to him cos he figured out how to talk to them. he wasn't string but he was brave. I'd like to to have a dragon, but only a nice one. "

Foxy rates this movie's "fabness" as:

Super Scrag: "One of the guys wasn't good in How to Train Your Dragon. I think it would be cool to train a dragon, but I think it would be too scary to fly on the back of a dragon. The guy who built the black dragon's tail was clever. He wasn't strong but he was clever and brave and he helped."

SuperScrag scores this movie's "super-ness" as:

..............

This movie would be great for an open-air movie night on a balmy summer evening (or a cosy winter-by-the-fire one instead). You could have heaps of fun with it and really go all out on the theme if you wanted to...

Ideas to Make Your "Dragon" Movie Night Super-Cool-Fab:
So much scope with a dragonish/Viking theme! How about making some Box Armour (from cardboard boxes, duct tape and string) and holding some dragon fights? (Paint Dad's face like a dragon, make some cardboard wings and a tail from stuffed newspaper.)

Then cook your dinner over a fire (if you don't have a fire pit, the gas BBQ will do). Cut steak into strips and thread them onto skewers. So delicious cooked over an open fire. If it's a warm night, why not roll the TV outside and have a movie night under the stars? Or hire a projector, string up a sheet, pop some popcorn and invite the neighbours... even better!

Have a great Saturday!
