Movie Theme Night: Arthur & the Invisibles

Every Saturday we will be sharing with you our ideas for family movie nights. Movie reviews and fun theme night ideas.

Meet Our Super-Cool-Fab Review Team...

Our crack team of expert Movie Reviewers are this week reviewing Arthur and the Invisibles.

This little-known movie is a mix of live action and animation, and was a surprisingly good watch. In fact, the kids watched this the first time without me and then begged me to watch it with them because "You'll love it mum, it's such a nice movie!" And it was.
Plenty of imagination and a dash of originality make this movie one that grown ups won't mind watching. There's wry humour and enough silliness to keep the younguns happy. A mix of action, heroes and villains and a satisfying conclusion make this a feel-good choice for Family movie night.

Movie Plot Summary: Boy-turned-unlikely-hero needs to save not only his family home but also the teensy world at the bottom of his garden - and a tiny feisty Princess. Freddie Highmore plays Arthur, the boy living in Depression-era USA, whose grandfather has disappeared leaving their home (and the invisible Minimoys who share their garden) at risk of demolition by a devious developer. Arthur needs to find his grandfather and save the day, which will take a whole lot of courage (The movie has a heartwarming theme of persevering against the odds and not giving up hope - and small heroes with big hearts can overcome huge obstacles - nice). Other famous names making an appearance include Mia farrow, David Bowie and Snoop Dog.

Here's what our experts have to say about Arthur and the Invisibles...

Dash. B. Cool: "It was a good movie, it was a bit funny. It wasn't the best movie I ever watched but I think it will be cool for other cool kids. I think it needs a bit more action."

Dash scores this movie's "coolness" as:

Foxy Fab: "It's cool, it's just a cool movie. The boy is nice and Princess is pretty. And the movie is funny too."

Foxy rates this movie's "fabness" as:

Super Scrag: "I liked this movie a little bit. I liked the part where the thingyabobby, that green guy pushed his head up. There was just one scary bit. I watched the scary bit, but I wanted to sit on my mummy's knee. I think big kids and little kids will like this movie a little bit but not babies. It wasn't really that funny."

SuperScrag scores this movie's "super-ness" as:

..............
I must say I'm a bit surprised at the harsh scores our experts gave this film, especially given that they raved about it as soon as they watched it. Perhaps the memory has dimmed in the weeks since the School Holidays. Because really, when the credits rolled on this movie, we were left feeling pretty warm and fuzzy. I'm sure I didn't imagine that.
Now it remains to be seen how the sequels play out (I've ordered them from Fatso for tonight's viewing, so we shall wait and see).

Idea to Make Your "Invisibles" Movie Night even more Super-Cool-Fab:
Seeing as this movie is about Minimoys (who are so very mini), take your movie night to a whole new level of fun with a Mini Banquet. Serve up all-things small for dinner - mini meatballs, mini pizzas, mini muffins. Serve dinner on leaves, and drinks in egg cups. You could even have Mini Ice Cream Sundaes in toy dolls cups. Really, just think SMALL. Get the kids to collect leaves, flowers and twigs from the garden to help decorate the table. If you really want to go all-out - make flower/leaf wreaths to wear. If it's a warm night - eat outside in the garden.

Have a great Saturday!
